If you haven't seen the video, a pitcher served up a home run pitch and then took out the hitter after he rounded third base in his victory trot--it was a brutal hit that sent the batter's helmet flying. There's a history there that goes beyond this single incident, so it's difficult to pin blame on any one person, but it's true that the pitcher has been banned from the league and several teammates and coaches have been suspended. What a sad reflection of our culture.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine continues to be savage and sickening, while back in our home country, the recent GOP assault on Ketanji Brown Jackson's ascent to becoming the first black female Supreme Court justice gnawed at me for weeks. To illustrate how partisan and unreasonable our elected officials can be, Missouri senator Roy Blunt said that Jackson "certainly is qualified" and that her confirmation "will make history" but that he would not vote for her. Meanwhile, Kevin McCarthy continues to lie through his teeth about the number one source of the January 6th, 2021 insurrection.
Dan Rather wrote an absolutely eloquent piece on the GOP's escalating venom this week, "Standing Up to Bullies." If I have it right, his website is [email protected].
The extreme right wing bent Rather speaks of is crap, a different form of road rage that rears its filthy head regularly now. This week at our library, a woman was enjoying a video (she had headphones on) and was laughing her ass off. I witnessed a man walking up to her with a loud voice, yelling that he was trying to read and to "shut the **** up." Anger keeps growing everywhere--when will it ease up a bit?
