It's fabulous that they are at long last honoring Carole King in 2015, but Eagles? The group with no "The" on their album covers just aren't among the best things American music has to offer, and methinks the show was going for ratings with little regard to anything else.
Really? If you want a transcendent rock band that hasn't yet been honored, it should be John Fogerty's Creedence Clearwater Revival. Here is a group that lit up the era with great singles and great albums--and remarkable songs. Not only that, their sound was really authentic and real at a point in time when rock audiences demanded it.
When it comes to Eagles, well, their sound is pleasant enough, even skillful, so most of America will enjoy them being honored. But I will need a barf bag when someone lauds them for "creating country rock" or some crap like that. It's not true. Ouch! Who will be the performer that will get to sing the bland and lamentable "Lyin' Eyes," which makes me lunge for the car radio dial to this day?
Love that true country rock by Detroit's Glenn Frey, Cleveland's Joe Walsh and the guy from Texas with the terrific voice, Don Henley. I'm serious about the terrific voice part, but that's all. Geez...how the mighty (television presentations) have fallen.
