He wasn't aware of Lhasa and neither was I, but thanks to Dave's email, when I found her latest release in a stack of music at my radio station today, I stopped. Then I was a little confused, and probably would have kept moving through that bunch of CDs had it not been for the album cover photo of a face that looked awfully familiar.
Isn't that...yes, Lhasa. Better late than never that I encountered this evocative, soulful music from an artist born in New York, who traveled in a converted school bus across the U.S. and Mexico with her family, and eventually settled up in Montreal in the 1990s.
I will be playing what appears to be her third album, Lhasa (Nettwerk/Audiogram),
at home a lot this week. Putting "What Kind Of Heart" on the air today and quickly searching to find out more about Lhasa's life was an unexpected, in-the-moment thing.
I am thankful to discover this kind of expressive artistry, however late.
But Lhasa's death is a huge loss to the music world. R.I.P.
